Arizona State University (ASU) GLG108 Water Planet Midterm 2 Practice Exam

Groundwater contamination from hydraulic fracturing, commonly known as fracking, poses significant risks to drinking water supplies. When chemicals and other substances used in the fracking process seep into groundwater sources, they can render the water unsafe for human consumption and negatively affect the surrounding ecosystems. Contaminated groundwater can lead to serious public health issues, as it may contain harmful pollutants that can cause illness if ingested or used for agricultural purposes.

In the context of this question, the other choices do not reflect the reality of groundwater contamination. Improved water quality, increased agricultural yields, and enhanced fish populations are all unlikely outcomes of contamination, as polluted water typically harms both human health and the environment, rather than contributing positively to these areas. Therefore, the correct answer highlights the critical issue of how fracking can endanger vital drinking water resources.
